So we're stuck here in Wellington

Hi all...and mum
This is er Miss 16 here (its weird calling myself that) so you can call me K-Dog.
Reporting back from Wellington while mum is off globe trotting and what not

I don't really see what the big deal is with the whole blogging thing...mum is always whining that she can't get something to work. Its cake really.

With out further ado, here is a day in the life of the our family without mum around - as told by our beloved cat Moe.

"The second they are all gone I like to spend a few minutes going through their stuff"

"Then I put on a load of washing ~ no one else is going to do it ~ "

"I do a bit of a work out on the ol' exer-cycle"

"Then I need some me time"

"Something always needs fixing around here..."

"Time to unload the laundry. Luckily I have a friend to do it with"

"Kids get home so I say hi to them"

"The privelaged ones get to help me cook dinner"

"Then a bit of last minute study finishes my day off"

Phew! What a day for Moe. Life must be tough for him without mum around to help out. Looks like he's coping alright though!

And now, a soothing haiku to send you away with:

Most haikus are weird
Some of them don't make much sense

Hope you enjoyed it. Drop uz a comment

photostory friday - the life of a hockey goalie

PhotoStory Friday
Hosted by Cecily and MamaGeek

a little background before i 'story'. miss 16's team have won all their games this season. easily. they had the chance to move up a grade or two, but game day didn't suit everyone, so the field players haven't had to extend themselves and their goalie certainly hasn't had much work to do.

this week is 'tournament week'. one or two games every day against other 2nd XI teams, but who are playing in a much higher grade, ie LOTS of work for the goalie.

five games played and lost. 6 nil x 4, 7 nil x 1. without the mad skills of my daughter, the score would have been much higher.

not only do you resemble the michelin man (or woman), you are then required to throw yourself around the goal with an unreasonable amount of flexibility.

it can be a lonely job
you have to be ready for anythingshe made save
after saveafter save
she threw her body on the line
more than once
sometimes you save it once only to have it pop in over your shoulderother times, you can only watch as it sails past you into the goal
unhappy goalie - made even more unhappy by her mother zooming in on her with telefoto lens

i got the 'don't look at me' sideways glance
then i 'got told'
fair enough.

last night i dreamt i was...

this was the theme of the year 12 semi-formal that miss 16 went to in the weekend. i love these events. not only does my fancy flash and my D400 get a huge workout, i love the buzz of watching and listening to the girls get ready.

this year it wasn't at my place, so i was able to drive the girls into town and return to a TIDY house, rather than the remnants of a 6-hour hair-styling, make-up marathon chick-fest!

tara doin' her make-up thang. she has a real flair for it, and the girls love placing themselves in her able hands!
so much make-up, so little time...
miss 16 kept the identity of her costume a closely guarded secret until the last minute...
sully and the flapper aka BFFL
who loves those fishnets and t-bars? I DO!!!

how cute is she?
they waited hours for the girls to get ready, but still managed a smile

of course the theme wasn't particularly relevant, it was just a good ole' fancy dress.
teenagers. how they love to pose
and pose some more

still with the posing...

it was an awful night weather-wise, but being the patron-saint of parking that i am, i found one right outside the door. miss 16 thought lego-brick guy was the best costume of the night.

he made it himself! some risked pneumonia just getting there...
like this guy...
and although it looks rather dark 'down there', he was wearing undies!!! that's a professional paint job too - pretty cool huh? he was freezing and glaring at his mum to finish taking pictures already. miss 16 ended up with pink arms after dancing with him! (they're mates).
the queen of funny faces - my child...

a star is born

this time last week miss 16's school rock band 'flamingo pink' had made it into the wellington regional finals of smokefree rockquest 2008.

fast forward a week to the regional finals...

it's a busy life as a rock chick. race home from a day at the bakery, grab your sticks and a home-made pie and off you go...

home-made mince and cheese pie
- the dinner of rock champions
here's flamingo pink doin' their thang. each band was alloted 7 minutes (ie, two songs)
it's a tough life as the drummer/her mother/photographer. there's usually something in front of her face, be it another body, a symbal or the neck of a guitar...
her big finish...
this is crap photo, but see the look of glee on finn's face (brown jacket and hat) as miss 16 is declared the winner of the 'female musicians award'
receiving her certificate and $150 cash cheque!!!
she now has the chance to win $1000 by writing a 300-500 word essay on her hopes and aspirations for her future music career

indulging her embarrassing mother (yet again)

i'm assuming there's one of these in every family.

you know, the one that pokes out their tongue in photos at the most inappropriate moment... her letter and certificate
it's a tough life as a rock'n'roll chick...
... play hard saturday, drool on the sofa sunday.

i've already emailed the school reminding them of the correct spelling of her name. they need this reminder, because when they printed details of last week's success, they did not, and it's one of those names that to me, when i see it misspelt - it's like it's not even my child!
yep. i'm that anal. and that proud of my girl.

i was trolling through some of the mom bomb 's earlier posts when i happened upon her 7th grade school photo, that she was brave enough to share. she was looking at her daughter's most recent school photo (wherein she resembled a jaded 45 year old lawyer) and was lamenting the fact that there are REALLY no good school photos.

i think most of us would agree with that, although i fail to see how my daughter is ever going to look back at THIS photo and feel the same way.

with $4000 teeth, good quality hair straighteners that your big sister is happy to lend you, and an extra 45 minutes to get ready in the morning - this is the result you get.

to quote her 18 year old sister "you're the hottest person in your class!" now that's sisterly love.

saving the world in her lunch hour

not content to be in one rock band, miss 16 is the drummer for 'flamingo pink', who debuted today as part of a world vision lunch-time concert at her college to raise money for the victims of cyclone nargis in myanmar.

'flamingo pink' are still in their garage phase, but were well received. being a female drummer brings with it a huge amount of kudos and my little rock chick always gets the biggest cheer (says she puffing her chest out with pride).

with the awful backlight, bright sun outside, small lense, no decent flash and the fact that i had to stand against the wall in my quest to keep a low profile ("you can come as long as you don't embarrass me!"), i've had to photoshop the crap out of these pics just to get them looking halfway decent.

you get the idea. teenagers, for all their alien behaviour, are really thoughtful junior citizens of the world.
